How to Store Sewing Machine Needles

Sewing

If you’re like me, you have a lot of sewing machine needles around that may (or may not) need a good home. But why is it that every time I start a new project, I have to hunt and hunt for the right needle? After organizing my sewing space for the hundredth time this year, I knew it was time to find a better way to store my sewing machine needles!

The Problem

Let’s face it when your local craft store has a 50% off notion sale, we all stock up. But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve purchased needles at the deal only to forget where I stashed them when I got home. What I needed was some storage that would keep these needle packets organized without adding any additional mess to my sewing room. I have limited “counter space” where I work, so finding a solution that could get safely tucked away into a drawer would be ideal. I also wanted a way to keep my needles stored by type so I wouldn’t have to sift through them all every time I start a new project.

The Solution

After hunting around the craft store, I came to the plastic storage boxes. And then I found this one which has both fixed slots and lots of small slide in dividers to customize the space. And of course, I love the mint green color (even though it doesn’t photograph very well).  I’ve seen lots of crafters use these boxes for scrapbooking, embroidery or jewelry supplies, but not sewing machine needles. After looking it over, I decided this would be the perfect place for me to store my needles. Besides the organized storage of the needles, this box also has a low enough profile to live in one of the drawers in my work table. This box holds all the needles I own, in separate compartments by type, and since it lives in the drawer, it doesn’t add any more clutter to my already messing workspace.

This is really helpful tips. We should always keep the needles in an organized way. but sometimes my needles got messed up and i can’t find the right needle for my stuff. please help

    • Thanks for reading and the comment! I arranged my plastic storage box to keep similar types of needles together in each compartment. The small dividers are really great for sectioning off these compartments, and making your needle stash more manageable. I hope that helps!

I like your article on the Merchant and Mills shirt wrap. I am using similar material to yours which I now have the confidence to begin. However when I laid the front piece on following the book my material is not wide enough. Is there any way round this . Many thanks Jo Ward

I’m sorry to hear you are struggling with this pattern- is the problem the actual width of your chosen woven fabric or the pattern itself? The instructions for the neckline and facing were a bit tricky, so if that is the issue I’m happy to help. You can always email me: jennifer@sewingisrequired.com and I would be happy to see what I can do. I really love this finished piece and I hope you are able to complete yours and enjoy it!
